Welcome to HDTV101

What is so great about HDTV? The most basic answer is...the picture. HDTV is 10 times sharper than the image seen on an old analog television. So whether you already have an HDTV or you are considering purchasing one and want to find out more before you do, HDTV101 has the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. We have compiled articles and information to help guide you through the process. Here at HDTV101, you can learn the most basic facts or more complex details on the technology behind High Definition Television.

TV Types and Technology

There are three main types of televisions on the market now. Rear Projection (DLP), Plasma and LCD.

We have found there is still a lot of confusion among consumers as to which is the best choice when shopping between these three types of television, especially Plasma and LCD. The truth is, in the past there were large differences between the technologies and capabilities of these TV’s, but that no longer holds true. There has been a maturity of technologies which allows these two to compete on a more even playing field. A big characteristic that still holds true is the difference is weight. Plasmas are almost twice as heavy as an LCD of the same picture size. Higher end Plasmas, such as a Pioneer Elite, still produces the blackest blacks. At ielectronics.com, we focus on the premium lines from our manufacturers which means the televisions you find on our website are going to be most competitive with each other regarding quality. While there really isn’t a general “best” choice across the board when considering these two; there is a “best” choice for your unique viewing situation. ielectronics.com has professionals who will be happy to speak with you over the phone, via email, or in person during one of our Free In Home Consultations to help assist you in discovering which is the best solution for you.

HDTV Connections Guide

HDMI HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. By delivering crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV), over a single cable.

Blu-ray™ Disc

Without Blu-ray, your HDTV is just a TV

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.

TV Calibration

TV Calibration

Believe it or not, your new HDTV could be better. Calibration is an important service that can ensure you get the best picture available. The mode your television was set on when it came out of the box is almost never set to industry standards. It’s likely to give you a much worse picture than what you see in the big showrooms because they tweak these sets displays to be ultrabright. Marketing research has shown that consumers often purchase the brightest TV when they shop the big box stores. Because of this fact, your new TV’s display can be greatly improved with professional calibration.

HD Programming

One of the best things you can do to compliment your HDTV is to combine it with HD programming. DIRECTV now offers over 130 HD channels. Not only does DIRECTV have the most HD channels, they also have the best HD equipment. We highly recommend going with DIRECTV, but if you don’t, we still suggest you go with any of the other HD programming providers to ensure you get the best picture possible. Getting high definition service on your HDTV will provide you with 1 million or more pixels to create images that appear sharper and more realistic than ever before. Contact ielectronics.com sales for more information or to sign up for DIRECTV HD programming.
